KEEPING FIT AND HEALTHY THROUGH THE WINTER SEASON

Another year is passing us by and winter brings to us all lots changes with the new season. This can mean many different things for each and every one of us. May it be fighting off colds and flu's, a time of parties and festivities, dealing with the stressful, commercial side of Christmas, or getting away from it all by hibernating to another country. What ever this season may bring for you, we must all remember to take extra care of ourselves.

  • Exercise: Getting to the gym or exercise class is the most difficult part of becoming motivated, but if you are feeling tired and lethargic, there's nothing better than getting the blood & adrenaline pumping round the body. You can also ease the guilt of sitting eating all those chocolates the night before.
  • Boost the Immune System: To help keep illnesses at bay eat plenty of fruit. Citrus, berries and dried fruits are practically good for boosting the immune system. When buying nuts go for the natural kind (rather than the roasted/salted variety) still in their shells. These contain natural healthy fats which the body needs.
  • Drink Plenty of Water!: If you've had a drink or two, try to remember a glass of water before bed to help keep the hangover at bay. A glass of hot water with a slice of lemon and a bowl of porridge in the morning has been proven as the best hangover cure and most effective way to detox the body.
  • Keep Warm: Try to avoid having the heating on full blast all day. This will cause your skin to dry out, help breed germs and is uneconomical for the environment. Instead pile on the layers of clothes. Have plenty of hot fluids, fruit/herbals teas and soups are a healthy alternative to tea and coffee. I always bring out the slow cooker for the winter it makes the evening meal so quick and easy. Just pop all the ingredients in the pot in the morning, and when you come in from the cold dark evening, you have a lovely hot, healthy meal ready, waiting for you.
  • Coping with Stress: Organisation can help cope with the busy period prior to Christmas. Avoid leaving everything to the last minute, note social activities in your diary and make lists of things you intend to do. Keeping fit and healthy will help your body cope with this hectic period. REMEMBER TO TAKE TIME OUT FOR YOURSELF. Give yourself time for peace and quite or a relaxing hobby. Reading, relaxing to music, meditation, yoga or a wonderfully relaxing holistic treatment.
